Donald Trump’s History of Hate for Haitians
Trump’s debate smears proved disturbing and disqualifying this week, but his loathing for migrants, specifically from Haiti, goes back much further
When Donald Trump raved about dogs and cats getting eaten by Haitian migrants in Springfield Ohio the other night, I’m afraid many people thought he was just going mad. Unfortunately, the venom he spewed during the debates was completely intentional. Whether Trump fastened onto this propagandistic story himself directly from “television” (which we should note is not a specific source, let alone a reliable one) as he claims or not, he was weaponizing stories that had already been circulated in the days leading up to the election. Trump’s VP candidate, the Ohio Senator JD Vance had already spread the same story—about his own constituents—while also claiming they were “illegal. So had Senator Ted Cruz. As had many other right-wing politicians and pundits.
But Donald Trump needs no prompting to unload vitriol upon Haitian immigrants. Indeed, he’s been singling them out for mistreatment for several years now.
