From Trump’s Golden Escalator to a Mass Shooting in El Paso, TX
When Donald Trump rode that golden escalator down to the ground floor of Trump Tower in June 2015 to announce he was running for President, he seized even that moment to describe Mexican immigrants as murderers, rapists and drug dealers. He spoke then of a crisis at our border, which simply didn’t exist. So not only was his characterization of immigrants way off base but illegal immigration to the United States was at its lowest point then in years.
Since then, however, Trump has seized every moment to characterize immigration as an “invasion” and even as an infestation. His administration implemented a policy to separate immigrant children from their parents and we now have over-crowded interment camps at our borders.
And yesterday, we had the mass shooting in El Paso. “This attack is a response to the Hispanic invasion of Texas,” this particular domestic terrorist wrote. “Invasion.” Not only does that invasion not exist, but El Paso is a notably safe place to live in these United States. But this…
